Arts and culture celebration ‘Queens Rising’ launches calendar of events for June

The arts and culture community came together at Queens Museum in Corona Thursday morning to launch the third annual Queens Rising celebration. 

The month-long celebration of local artists and venues will kick off on June 1 with a packed calendar of events that highlight the diversity of the borough. Last year, Queens Rising partnered with 100 local organizations and promoted over 300 events throughout the month. 

This year’s new initiative is “Queens Scene,” which will bring a series of performances by artists who live and work in Queens to four partner venues: Flushing Town Hall, Jamaica Center for Arts and Learning, the Queens Botanical Garden and Terraza 7 in Elmhurst.

Brooklyn man indicted on manslaughter, DWI charges in deadly Astoria crash that killed the mother of his child: DA

A Brooklyn man was indicted by a Queens grand jury on charges of manslaughter, drunk driving and other crimes for a fatal collision in Astoria that killed his long-time girlfriend and mother of their young child in February.

Ray Perez, 27, of Caton Avenue in Flatbush, was arraigned Thursday in Queens Supreme Court on a 13-count indictment charging him with vehicular manslaughter for allegedly speeding through a stop sign in Astoria, colliding with another vehicle and slamming into two parked cars, and then driving nearly four miles away to a street in Maspeth before seeking help for his 29-year-old girlfriend Bridget Enriquez, who later succumbed to her injuries.

(The 49 other states and the federal government have a dangerousness standard. NY State is the only state that lacks this essential protection from the State’s most dangerous offenders.)

FDNY rescues two residents from three-alarm house fire in Richmond Hill Wednesday

The FDNY had a massive response to a three-alarm house fire in Richmond Hill on Wednesday morning.

After receiving a call at 10:22 a.m. reporting a fire on the second floor of a two-story private home at 87-35 126th St., firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke billowing from the wood-frame building. The FDNY transmitted a second alarm at 10:33 a.m. after the fire extended to a brick two-story home next door. The blaze went to a third alarm at 10:59 a.m. bringing a total of 33 units and 138 firefighters and EMS personnel to the scene.

Glendale man indicted for murder in fatal stabbing of girlfriend at a Maspeth tavern: DA

A Glendale man was indicted by a Queens grand jury for murder and weapons charges for the fatal stabbing of his girlfriend at an Irish pub in Maspeth last month.

Marcin Pieciak, 36, of 76th Street, was arraigned Friday in Queens Supreme Court on an indictment charging him with murder for allegedly stabbing Sarah McNally, while she was working as a bartender at The Céilí House—before slitting his own throat.
